The PlayStation 5 has been out for some time now, and its reception has been mostly positive (assuming you can get your hands on the machine). It includes lots of quality-of-life improvements over its predecessor, the PlayStation 4, such as faster load times, a solid-state drive (SSD) instead of a regular hard disk drive (HDD), and an improved controller thanks to the new DualSense. Having said all that, a console is only as good as the games available on it, and thankfully, the PS5 has you covered on that front as well.
While the machine already has a worthy library of good PS5 games, there are even more to look forward to, with some releasing as soon as this month, while others are years away. In the video game world, it’s not uncommon to be aware of games that are still several years off, while it’s also normal for a new game to be revealed and launched within just a couple of months. In this comprehensive list, we’ll go through the major PS5 releases from 2022, leading up to 2023.
The popular racing game is coming back in a big way, and the developer says players will be thrilled to get their hands on the redesigned campaign mode. The trailer gave us a glimpse of something called GT Town, which seemed to provide a robust roadmap for planning out your life as a racer. Sony said it is working on fancy audio tricks for this presentation, and it showed — viewers could feel every gear shift, thanks to some impressive audio engineering. Couple that with the new DualSense controller, and we’re looking at one of the most sensory-intensive racing sims ever made. During the 2021 PlayStation Showcase, Gran Turismo 7‘s release date was revealed, along with a fancy new trailer.
The expectations for WWE 2K22 are through the roof considering it will have been the first new entry in the series in over two years. Following the departure of longtime WWE developer Yuke’s, 2K had to shift production to Visual Concepts. The team is apparently revamping a lot of the gameplay in WWE 2K22, including updated controls and a rebuilt engine. Interestingly, it’s slated for a March 2022 release window, which is unusual since the WWE 2K games typically launch in the fall. Given the WWE’s odd decision to release many of its top superstars as of late, it’s unclear if 2K22 will launch on time. Since the cancelation of WWE 2K21, a lot is riding on the success of this new entry.
Not much else is known about this “enhanced and expanded” version of GTA V, but at the very least, it’s going to look great running on the PlayStation 5. Sony’s Future of Gaming presentation revealed a bunch of footage from the game; however, it was apparently running on a PlayStation 4. Interestingly, GTA Online will be free for PS5 owners within the first three months of the game’s release. During the 2021 PlayStation Showcase, it was announced that Grand Theft Auto V will launch in March 2022, suffering a slight delay from November 2021.
First revealed during Summer Game Fest 2021, Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands is a fantasy take on the Borderlands formula, with loot, dragons, and magic spells to defeat your foes with. But it still takes place in the Borderlands universe (sort of), so you can expect to use guns and powerful melee weapons, as well. During the 2021 PlayStation Showcase, we got to see gameplay for Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands for the first time, along with its release date of March 25, 2022.
Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga will be a marquee title in the franchise, with improved combat, and the ability to play any of the nine episodes in any order. In this game, you’ll have the ability to explore various planets and will even be able to engage in dogfights with enemy ships. Based on the scope for The Skywalker Saga, it’s understandable why his compellation has been in development for years. Sadly, it has suffered numerous delays, but it will now launch in April 2022.
Ghostwire: Tokyo re-imagines the popular city as a mysterious and supernatural place. Faceless enemies roam the streets, inexplicably toting umbrellas wherever they go, and players will engage in magical battles doled out from a first-person perspective. It’s a collaboration between Tango Gameworks (developers of The Evil Within) and Bethesda Softworks and will be exclusive to PlayStation 5. This is despite Microsoft now owning Bethesda. The strange title is expected to launch in March 2022.
Each year, the MLB video game series quietly sells millions of copies, and has done so as a PlayStation exclusive. That is, until MLB The Show 21 launched in 2021. Going forward, the series will now be multiplatform, coming to Xbox and Nintendo Switch, as well as PlayStation. Of course, it’s at home on PS5, boasting impressive visuals and fantastic gameplay. This year’s installment is MLB The Show 22, featuring Shohei Ohtani as the cover athlete. It’ll launch in April 2022.
